So you love Grand Theft Auto but wish it was multiplayer? Well, the wait is over. Check out this FREE expansion for GTA3 & GTA:Vice City.
Multi Theft Auto is a free expansion for GTA3 and GTA: Vice City. The expansion was developed independently by a team of developers who decided to do what Rockstar Games did not... Make GTA multiplayer!
The Expansion consists of a small Client program (576KB) that allows you to connect to a MTA Server (64KB Linux | 120KB WIN) that is available for both the Windows and Linux platforms.
I tried it out last week and it ROCKS! There have been things such as pedestrians and traffic removed from the game, as well as some of the weapons, but they have kept the environment the same, and in the most recent releases, allowed you to walk, run and drive helicopters & cars.
You begin the game by running the client program and connecting to the server. Once connected, the program allows you to launch GTA. You are presented with a new option under start new game, allowing you to join MTA. Next you choose your character: Cop, Sailor, Mexican, Thug or Punk. Each character comes with a different starting set of weapons and alliances.
Once in the game you start by searching for a car by pressing the AIM key (right mouse) which shows all available vehicles on the mini-map as purple arrows. From there you are free to do what ever you like. You can talk to other players by pressing "T" and typing a message. One of the cool things is that you could meet up with another player and hop into his car or helicopter by pressing the "HOME" key, and let him take you for a ride.
The possiblities are endless. Organize a point-to-point race, demolition derbi, create two gangs and take each other out, do a relay race, set up two points on opposite sides of the map and see who can collect the most cars, or whatever else you can think of.
I set up a linux version of the server and it ran great, although there were a few bugs here and there. I will be trying the new version (0.2.1) tonight, which claims to fix many of the bugs.
